REGION » KALWARIA ZEBRZYDOWSKA AND WADOWICE

The Bernadine monastery in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and the family house of Karol Wojtyła in Wadowice.

Situated 35 km south west of Cracow is Kalwaria Zebrzydowska with its 17th c. Bernadine monastery, Church of the Virgin and Via Dolorosa. It was built by the Zebrzydowski family after a vision of three crosses on the site, to become one of Poland's most popular sites of pilgrimage. In the picturesque surrounding hills you will find numerous small churches and chapels, many modelled on buildings from the holy city.

Wadowice is a small town known throughout the world for being the birth place of John Paul II. Today there is a small museum in the family house where you can get to know the history of the Wojtyla family and of the Wadowice region.
