The Tatra Mountains - following in the footsteps of the highlanders

This tour is for anyone interested in the beautiful and rich culture of the mountaineers who lived in the only alpine mountains in Poland - the Tatra Mountains. The culture of their inhabitants is expressed through rich traditions - colourful folk costumes, music, dance, cuisine and a unique type of wooden architecture. Polish, Slovakian and Hungarian influences make the culture of the Polish Mountaineers exceptional.

Our excursion will introduce you to the beauty of the mountain landscape and its live folk culture. You will be able to visit the stone, wool, wood and leather workshops where traditional products have been made for centuries.

The trip begins at Debno where you can visit the fascinating old wooden church. Built in the 15th century, it is said to be the oldest surviving wooden church in Europe. Inside there is a beautiful mural from the year 1500. The tour then continues to Bukowina Tatrzanska, known as the winter sports centre. We suggest a visit to the blacksmiths´ and sculptures´ workshops belonging to local folk artists. On the way to Zakopane there is a wonderful panorama of the mountains. The visit to Zakopane starts at the Tatrzanskie Museum followed by a stroll through the oldest parts of the city. There are examples of regional wooden architecture, known as Zakopane Style, including the Villa Pod Jedlami, designed by Stanislaw I. Witkiewicz. After lunch, the tour returns to Cracow, stopping at the "living Skansen" of Chocholow, a village which boasts a unique spatial layout as well as many beautiful wooden houses built during the 18th and 19th centuries.
